I spent my Sunday at the Dalhousie Student Union building at TEDxNovaScotia today along with nearly 400 other people taking in some ideas and music. \u00a0I caught wind of this event back in early February and dithered about going. \u00a0I have been regarding the TED format and phenomenon a little differently after thinking on\u00a0some\u00a0critiques<\/a> and insights from friends like D’Arcy Norman’s I won\u2019t be going to TEDxYYC<\/a>\u00a0and Brian Lamb’s \u00a0\u201ca particular innovation feel\u2026\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and regarded this event with some scepticism, but … on the same hand … this TEDx event was organized and executed by student volunteers<\/a>,\u00a0some of my favorite people have lit up the TEDlights<\/a>, and sometime presentations just Doot\u00a0Doola\u00a0Doot\u00a0Doo It Yourself\u00a0<\/a>– so I ponied up the reasonable $25 fee and found my way to the SUB<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I won’t give a blow by blow of the the entire event, but here are a few notable pieces that captivated me:<\/p>\n

Robert Huish<\/a> is a\u00a0a professor of International Development at Dalhousie University who has incorporated brilliant elements of service learning<\/a> in his undergraduate courses. \u00a0An interview on CBCRadio last year touches on many of pieces he addressed in his talk.<\/p>\n

Max Haiven<\/a> is an artist, postdoc with the NYU\u00a0Department of Art and Public Policy<\/a>, and\u00a0an Adjunct Faculty with Nova Scotia College of Art and Design –\u00a0Historical and Critical Studies<\/a>. \u00a0Max spoke brilliantly about projects he is involved with:\u00a0Strike Debt<\/a>, Radical Imagination Project<\/a>, and wasn’t shy to show his support of arts education and NSCAD<\/a>.<\/p>\n
