{"id":330,"date":"2010-05-15T12:28:43","date_gmt":"2010-05-15T20:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.unbc.ca\/~gpotter\/?p=330"},"modified":"2010-05-15T12:28:43","modified_gmt":"2010-05-15T20:28:43","slug":"statistics-canada-ibm-manyeyes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/networkeffects.ca\/?p=330","title":{"rendered":"Statistics Canada &#038; IBM ManyEyes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='e-content'><script src=\"http:\/\/wikified.researchlabs.ibm.com\/potter_dashboard\/StatsCan_1:VisTitle\/1070001996\/embed.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The visualization above represents StatsCan records indicating <a href=\"http:\/\/www40.statcan.gc.ca\/l01\/cst01\/comm32a-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Internet use by individuals, by selected frequency of use and ages<\/a> spanning 2005 &#8211; 2009.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I presented a short intro to IBM ManyEyes Wikified at <a href=\"http:\/\/northernvoice.pbworks.com\/2010-Alt-Moosecamp?SearchFor=altmoosecamp&amp;sp=1\" target=\"_blank\">#altmoosecamp<\/a> session at <a href=\"http:\/\/2010.northernvoice.ca\/\">#nv10<\/a> which generated a number of hallway conversations with folks interested in working with StatsCan data and looking at ways some dense datasets could be effectively visualized.<\/p>\n<p>While listening to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/w6\/\">The World @ 6<\/a> this week I caught a  news story dealing with survey <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/daily-quotidien\/100510\/dq100510a-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\">data recently released by StatsCanada examining  Internet use in Canada over the past 10 years<\/a>.\u00a0 The scope of growth  and shifting demographics of Internet use in Canada was lost in the  figures and statistics and I thought these table would be a good  candidate for visualization experiments.\u00a0 I decided the check this StatsCan data out and attempt to visualize it  using IBM ManyEyes Wikified.\u00a0 All of the tables listed by StatsCan are  available in .xls, .csv, and .txt files.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" src=\"http:\/\/content.screencast.com\/users\/UNBC\/folders\/Jing\/media\/639bbca0-cdcc-4fcb-95ff-41cc866106db\/00000063.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"335\" \/><br \/>\nI retrieved the .csv data from StatsCan and prepped it for ManyEyesWikified with a little GDocs editing.\u00a0\u00a0 To do this I simply uploaded the .csv file to GDocs, cleaned the header up, and published the resultant data set using the &#8216;Publish as Webpage&#8217; feature to get <a href=\"http:\/\/spreadsheets.google.com\/pub?key=0AsoX4upelI9CdFZEbkxxQy1RVnBmbG5Ncm1GeFJtcnc&amp;hl=en&amp;output=html\" target=\"_blank\">a public URL<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is possible to pull web data directly into ManyEyesWikified and edit the results within the wiki.\u00a0 ManyEyesWikified employs the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikicreole.org\/wiki\/Creole1.0\">WikiCreole <\/a>markup and is similiar to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediawiki.org\/wiki\/MediaWiki\" target=\"_blank\">Mediawiki<\/a> markup &#8211; the same used by Wikipedia, but I find GDocs a little easier for cleaning up large tables for visualization.\u00a0 Using the data import markup I pointed ManyEyesWikified at my public GDoc and let ManyEyes do the rest\u00a0 &#8211; to see the markup I sused <a href=\"http:\/\/wikified.researchlabs.ibm.com\/potter_dashboard\/StatsCan_1:VisTitle\/edit\">you can access my page here<\/a> ( note: you will need to signup for a free account to access the page. )<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\nOnce imported and published in a visualization, ManyEyesWikified gives you &lt;embed&gt; code allowing you to &lt;embed&gt; your visualization at your site.\u00a0 Even better, the embedded java applet checks the source data for updates\/changes each time it loads to refresh the graphic.<\/p>\n<p>I plan to chip away at these datasets over the next few weeks and hopefully complete a full page of visualizations at ManyEyesWikified that effectively visualize the tables full of rich data dealing with Internet use in Canada.<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The visualization above represents StatsCan records indicating Internet use by individuals, by selected frequency of use and ages spanning 2005 &#8211; 2009. .
