{"id":392,"date":"2010-11-01T04:31:15","date_gmt":"2010-11-01T12:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.unbc.ca\/~gpotter\/?p=392"},"modified":"2010-11-01T04:31:15","modified_gmt":"2010-11-01T12:31:15","slug":"halloween-rotoscoping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/networkeffects.ca\/?p=392","title":{"rendered":"Halloween Rotoscoping"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='e-content'><object width=\"450\" height=\"350\" data=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/HqXwAR3yQh4?version=3\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/HqXwAR3yQh4?version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>The kids and I had a hoot this weekend making some fun Halloween clips using a film editing technique called <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rotoscoping\" target=\"_blank\">rotoscoping<\/a>. \u00a0I wanted the kids to work with an easy set of techniques to add special effects, particularly sci-fi effects. \u00a0Gabriel is a huge Star Wars fan so lasers and lightsabers ranked high on their requested list of effects.<\/p>\n<p>After spending an hour with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/aftereffects\/\" target=\"_blank\">Adobe After Effects CS5<\/a> it was clear the the methods and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User_experience_design\" target=\"_blank\">UX<\/a> would be far beyond what they could manage on their own. \u00a0A little more digging brought up <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.objectustech.com\/SaberFX\" target=\"_blank\">SaberFX<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; a rotoscoping utility for OSX designed solely for the purpose of Star Wars effect rotoscoping &#8230; perfect!<\/p>\n<p>The program is wonderfully simple &#8211; force lightening and lightsaber effects. \u00a0Gabriel discovered that drawing lightsabers in segments resulted in laser blasts &#8211; a discovery that yielded the Star Wars battle trifecta: force lightening, lightsabers, and blasters!<\/p>\n<p>Once a video segment is complete SaberFX, can render it to a .mov file for import to iMovie for the addition of sound effects, titles, and music. \u00a0We will definitely be working on some longer features in the weeks to come and are working on building some plans and storyboards for our very own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atom.com\/channel\/channel_star_wars\/\" target=\"_blank\">fan film<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The unregistered version is free to use, but will stamp an &#8216;unregistered version&#8217;
