{"id":46,"date":"2008-11-16T10:31:37","date_gmt":"2008-11-16T18:31:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.unbc.ca\/~gpotter\/?p=46"},"modified":"2008-11-16T10:31:37","modified_gmt":"2008-11-16T18:31:37","slug":"mobile-broadcasting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/networkeffects.ca\/?p=46","title":{"rendered":"Mobile Broadcasting"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='e-content'>I spent some time this weekend at community events and thought I&#8217;d try out a couple iPhone apps I have been meaning to explore for the past few weeks. \u00a0First event &#8211; a Lego competition hosted by the <a title=\"Northern BC Lego Club\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nbclc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Northern BC Lego Club<\/a> &#8211; you read that correctly. \u00a0While waiting for the competition to open I connected my phone to the library wireless and fired up <a title=\"Qik\" href=\"http:\/\/qik.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Qik<\/a> &#8211; an application that allows you to broadcast live video and audio to an embedded player in your blog. \u00a0Below is a clip of a massive Lego installation illustrating a methanol production facility.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"319\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/qik.com\/swfs\/qik_player.swf?streamname=f441e3b2578c4983b5c2f9917065feca&amp;vid=573956&amp;playback=false&amp;polling=false&amp;user=grantpotter&amp;displayname=grantpotter&amp;safelink=grantpotter&amp;userlock=true&amp;islive=&amp;username=anonymous\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"319\" src=\"http:\/\/qik.com\/swfs\/qik_player.swf?streamname=f441e3b2578c4983b5c2f9917065feca&amp;vid=573956&amp;playback=false&amp;polling=false&amp;user=grantpotter&amp;displayname=grantpotter&amp;safelink=grantpotter&amp;userlock=true&amp;islive=&amp;username=anonymous\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" wmode=\"transparent\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Next event &#8211; the <a title=\"Prince George Symphony Orchestra\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pgso.com\/music\" target=\"_blank\">Prince George Symphony Orchestra<\/a> performing Peter and Wolf during the<a title=\"Exploration Place\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theexplorationplace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Exploration Place<\/a> Family Day. \u00a0For this event I thought I would try the app &#8211; Record. \u00a0Record is a fairly straightforward recording application but also gathers locative date using the iPhone integrated GPS. \u00a0The result is an MP3 recording with time\/date\/location stamp. \u00a0Recordings can be sorted within the app by a &#8216;Smart Location&#8217; folder feature. \u00a0This feature allows you to sort recordings based on your location to the original recording source location. \u00a0For example, I can set a folder to only show recordings that were made within 20 miles of me. \u00a0Not sure how this would be useful &#8211; but it sure is cool. \u00a0The downside: you need to use a application called <a title=\"Sink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.polarbearfarm.com\/notepad\/support\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sink<\/a> to export the audio from the device &#8211; a process that appears to strip the locative metadata. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here is a short clip I recorded during the performance of Peter and the Wolf.<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"http:\/\/blip.tv\/scripts\/pokkariPlayer.js?ver=2008010901\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script> <script src=\"http:\/\/blip.tv\/syndication\/write_player?skin=js&amp;posts_id=1483123&amp;source=3&amp;autoplay=false&amp;file_type=mp3&amp;player_width=320&amp;player_height=260\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div id=\"blip_movie_content_1483123\"><a onclick=\"play_blip_movie_1483123(); return false;\" rel=\"enclosure\" href=\"http:\/\/blip.tv\/file\/get\/Grantpotter-PGSOPeterAndTheWolf354.mp3\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click to play\" src=\"http:\/\/blip.tv\/file\/get\/Grantpotter-PGSOPeterAndTheWolf354.mp3.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Video thumbnail.
